Woman finds hurtful message inside Vitamin Water bottle cap
Was it an unfortunate combination of random words or a poor attempt at being bilingual? Either way, Coca-Cola has apologized to a Canadian woman who unscrewed the cap from her bottle of Vitamin Water and found the words "YOU RETARD" printed inside.
"The R-word is just something we don't say in our family," Blake Loates told Metro, adding that her younger sister has cerebral palsy. The sisters' father wrote several letters to Coca-Cola asking for an explanation. According to the company, its caps currently feature "a random English word followed by a random French word" ("retard" means to be late in French), but it took responsibility for the mistake. "We did not mean to offend at all," Coke's Canadian director of brand communications said. "We are certainly very apologetic for this oversight."

Think about if for a minute, water is free so paying for something that is free but in a toxic bottle with "supposed" vitamins - maybe the saying was fitting afterall. Drink water from your tap as it's less toxic and purchase vitamin rather than contributing to these large companies that destroy our environment and our health. Get smart and get informed.

I might buy the French word explanation if the R word had not been preceded by an English word. Ugh!

Well said Deny!

Well she obviously is a retard tho or why would she buy zero-calorie vitamin water for $3?

Get over it!!!!!!!!!!
RETARDS!! YOUR FUCKING RIDICULOUS...YOU GOT NOTHING BETTER TO DO? SERIOUSLY

It's pretty sad that people can't just laugh over something like that...nothing can be funny anymore.

The R-word is hurtful because it is exclusive and offensive. It's derogatory. Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions. Pledge today to use respectful, people-first language at www.r-word.org

Coca Cola has nothing to apologize for. And to you people that are easily offended - get over yourselves.

i agree with puthealthfirst. however, 99% of everything you buy in stores, even vitamins, are packed full of fillers. like corn and starch and stuff that is cheap. lots of companies try to create synthetic replacements for what we can find in plants. GO GREEN AND BOYCOTT EVERYBODY

not to mention all coke products have salt as one of their main ingredients. which means after quenching your thirst from any beverage, will inevitably make you more thirsty again in a matter of minutes.

An infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters are inevitably going to offend somebody...

The word "RETARD", as used in this case, and by some the less informed posters, namely Michael, Rob , Shannon and Matt, is used as an epithet. (Look it up) It is meant to demean and exclude certain people. For those who are insensitive to others, especially a group that cannot hurt you and wishes you no harm, I sincerely hope you get what's coming to you. And you will. One day, you will. Personally, I think you are a bunch of Coke suckers!!

In this time of age, there are so many words and/or things that offend certain people....companies need to stay one top of what sells and what don't...if they plan to stamp words or anything on their items for sale they should be sure there is nothing there to offend someone....last time I checked it was offensive to call someone a 'Retard" regardless..yes the company should be responsible for this oversite..those who think they should just get over it...well...look at it this way....if your child was called that in school...this would be a form of bullying...wouldn't you agree?

WE should appologize to Coca Cola. The rest of the world can only wish they had the high standards that Coca Cola has always had! Please don't put down Coca Cola for trying to make an honest living making new products to be competitive in today's market. I will always wish Coca Cola well!!

Thank you Fred!

I work with concrete. Sometimes we add a retarder to retard the set time of the concrete. People really need to get over themselves. Those that take offense to the use of the word are the ones that see it, and have probably used it, as derogatory.

Why would a company as large as Coke risk offending anyone for the sake of offending them. It was obviously a mistake of one kind or another. Use your common sense in this. It was a mistake people. Good for you 'COKE'. Love most of your products!

Seriously?? This Blake woman is taking it personally? What a waste of breath and time. Why are some people so sensitive to words. She obviously has way too much time on her hands. Retard is a real word. Not a swear word. Ugh! Ands whats with the clueless people commenting on the water. Its not regular water. Its actually pretty damn good. Don't mock it until you try it.

im sure it was an honest mistake. nobody died, nobody got hurt. get over it. some people just need to make an issue of everything. its almost comical and in my opinion coincidental that both of these words where printed on the cap. guess what , its now a collectors item. but im sure the owner will destroy it and not sell. !!

Hey, if they put on the bottle as a name "I'm a retard" it would be the biggest selling item on the shelves, but it is a put down, but then again she didn't give it to her sister to open, so she is the retard for buying it in the first place! Wonder if she poured it out after spending $3 bucks for it or she poured it in a glass and just knew she was one!

This is hilarious, I can't stop laughing, I mean what are the chances that these two words got randomly put together? But hey Coke why not put the same word, you know translate, that way we can learn something. People could collect the caps and use them like flash cards. I myself wouldn't, I also drink tap water. I have never been able to understand why people buy water, especially since the day I had to buy some and read the label only to find that it was actually tap water from a big city in the US (I don't remember the brand or the city). So we (stupid Canadians) sell our good, pure, fresh, spring water (Naya for one) to the US and they (smart? Americans) sell us their used recycled city water ... and we buy it!

Seriously? They just print two random words, one English and one French under a bottle cap, with no filtering and monitoring, and no accent marks or other signs that one word is in French, and think that nothing will go wrong?
By the way, 'You retard' IS an insult, you douche. What, don't tell me that YOU"RE insulted, now? It's exactly the same format, and 'douche' only means 'shower' in French.
'You' and 'I' should have been automatically filtered out, along with anything else that would commonly make up a phrase. Maybe take out all nouns.

It is the word used by pharmacists at Shoppers Drug Mart and they never apologize.

JACOB! Why don't you do your homework, buddy? Have you no idea the reason why salt is in such drinks? You truly should have been the one to receive that bottle cap!!!

Since when do we reserve the right no to be offended. Get over it. Most would just laugh at it, tell a few friends and forget about it.

Should of been in Montreal or Quebec, they don't speak or understand English !!

i have never paid more than municipal rates for water in my long life.... there's plenty "o" retards in this world.
Posted by: Jan Chobaniuk | Sep 19, 2021 10:05:42 PM
Really nothing to apologize for? You think that was random? Somehow I doubt it but even is it is what is the point of having different English and French words. Canada's laws are that English be translated to French so why not you and vous. Ultimately Coca-Coca a huge multi national company had a responsibility to oversee their production properly. I work with disabled students and have a son with a disability who can read well, so I don't think it is OK and that I should just "lighten up".
