Ryanair planning in-flight porn rentals, CEO says

Once again, there ought to be no reason we continue following Ryanair in this space.

Stock-photo-13195362-xxx-neon-signThe airline offers exactly zero North American flights, and were it not for the outfit’s bombastic PR-hungry CEO, only budget Euro travellers would have even heard the “Ryanair” name.

Yet here we are, for the umpteenth time, discussing the Irish company. Last month, it was because the airline announced it’d be removing the toilets from its planes to make more room for seats.

Now, in spite of its lesser number of washrooms, Ryanair appears to be advocating the mile-high club. Only, if the airline has its way, perhaps attaining such membership will become a solo venture.

According to The Sun newspaper, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary is hoping to soon launch an in-flight app travelers with iPads or smartphones can log into to access a number of pay-per-use services.

*Bing: Just how cheap are Ryanair’s flights, anyway?

Much like in a hotel room, the app would give fliers the opportunity to pay to gamble, play games and watch movies.

Though much like in a hotel room, the app would also give fliers the opportunity to watch porn.

Yes, pending upgrades to its planes’ broadband connection capabilities, O’Leary says the in-flight entertainment app, which would include access to adult movies, may soon be on its way.

“I’m not talking about having (porn) on screens on the back of seats for everyone to see. It would be on handheld devices,” the CEO said. “Hotels around the world have it, so why wouldn’t we?”

That’s a loaded question, to be sure. You’ve got your own answer, no doubt, and hopefully it includes a crack about guys taking extra long bathroom breaks with iPhones in hand. And, if you prefer, the words “lift-off,” “cockpit” and “peanut cart.”

Still, in what is a storied history of controversial headlines for his airline, O’Leary at least has the world paying attention. And that is, no matter where you stand on his business model, perhaps the reason Ryanair has been able to thrive over a time when many competitors have simply fallen off.
