Summer jobs still not there for students
All in all, there’s a lot of positive economic news for Canadians these days.
And no small sum of that has to do with employment, a sector in which our nation added 108,700 jobs last month, according to Statistics Canada.
Yet that’s all well and good for adults seeking full-time work ... but what about students?
Last year around this time we discussed how Canada’s first summer of recession was going to take with summer employment for teens and twentysomethings.
The results? Not good. By August of 2009, the unemployment rate of full-time Canuck students between 15 and 24 was 16.4 per cent, but even that was down from 21.1 per cent, the huge rate as it stood at the start of the summer, in May of ’09.
Compare those numbers to pre-recession data -- in 2008, the unemployent rate for youths among those same parameters dipped to as low as 11.4 per cent.
But now that the economy has righted itself – or, at the very least, reached the path to recovery – how are students finding the job market this year?
Well, we won’t have numbers until later in 2010, but by most anecdotal evidence, the problems are still here.
“Companies are still being very, very conservative about hiring,” a University of Calgary career advisor recently told the Calgary Herald.
“We’re just not seeing the employment opportunities rise with the economic recovery.”
Indeed, the pipeline of student jobs seems to be the last to open as the downturn ceases, which is leading to a void of entry-level positions for Canadian youths to fill.
Students: are you having trouble finding work again this year, and parents: are your kids running out of places to drop off their résumés?

The companies have to take this concern into consideration that graduates of colleges and universities are still looking for work all across Canada. And if 108000 jobs have been added in April, why students are looking for work??????? Because company tells to bring experience and how can a fresh graduate would gain experience if not given chance to gain experience. The government should take action for these new grads to get them job. Good luck! Thanks.

Tony, it sounds like you are in, what I call, the difficult stage in life, where you feel you're damned either way. Take heart. My best advice to you, if you strongly believe you are qualified for the job, apply for it--whether it says you need experience or not! Then...at this point in life, DON'T demand high wages and full benefits, and be willing to be taught by your manager...even if you think you DO know it all. If they will only take part-time, and it's your only offer...take it!
However, this is NOT the government's fault. It is not anyone's fault really. It's just simply a very frustrating part of getting out of college/university. That's all.

I find it interesting to note that while I have 3 years of university education, I cannot find a company willing to hire me either for the summer, or to continue through my studies in a training-like atmosphere while someone I know has no formal education beyond high school and he is now become quite proficient in marketing and it and has no problem with his job.....

Hi, it's sad to see that theres no opportunity for summer jobs in reality. Sure does put a burden on the parents for more buying needs and wants for their kids. The companies are just plain greedy thats all, they want to only hire a skeleton crew for a store and then work them to their bones for less money. Also all the immigrants that took up all the minimum wage jobs that supposedly no one else wanted before is now wanted by everyone. I am stating the facts and that If this happened in russia or somewhere and all the canadians took their jobs, they would be mad.

What are these "summer (only) jobs"?. The luxury model of working for 4 months at good wages to finance the other 8 months of being a student only is no longer reality. The concept of hiring "summer students" to fill in for staff vacations is long gone. Even back in the day when there were "summer jobs" they almost only went to kids of employees. Very difficult for an outsider with no connections to get one. My son just finished second yr university. He works fast food all school year to help with costs and then he has a built in job for summer where he then picks up extra hours during the summer.

I graduated with a 4 year commerce degree in May of last year. I only found a job 2 months ago and even then I'm not making much money. These students who are graduating and expecting to get their dream job and make 40k their first year are going to get a wake up call. You need to start at the bottom even if you have an education. Just because you are out of school does not mean you don't need to work your tail off. You do! And it's not going to be easy. I went for 4 months with out even an interview and I was applying for jobs I was overqualified for. Even then I had to accept a seasonal position for the fall at minimum wage.

Oh yes.....you dont have experience but cant get any if no one gives you a job. This is not new.
It has happened to every generation and this one is no different. I have hired in the past and did not hire that many college or university students. The reason was they wanted a lot more money than the high school student wanting the same summer job. Expectations are to high. An edcuation, or being enrolled is post secondary education does not equate to high wages and students need to understand this. You cant start at the top.
The good news is you will be the one who is promoted in the long run, it just takes awhile to get there. Everyone seems to want to start with wages and benefits it took my generation 30+ years to build up to. Patience..... you will need to put more into your life than four years to reap the benefits. Education is a buldiing block for your future...not a guarantee of anything.

And what about those students who are looking for a summer job that (if it works out) wants to continue with the company and doesn't mind starting at the bottom? I've been told to come back when I'm not a student any more, as my resume is impressive. How about working with students to create something where the student can gain the experience needed, make some money and still continue their schooling (when appropriate of course)?

Yup, immigrants will come into companies likes Rogers and not hire anyone but more immigrants and/or their own Nationality. Seen it, experienced it, and I am still baffled by it. Our country is going to crumble eventually due to this, and you can thank the immigration system of the Canadian government.

our country will fall apart, by the year 2025 whites will become a minority in a country they established. it may not have been fair how they took this land, but its the way our constitutions are written that have led us to this point. we allow more, and more, and more immigrants every year, they reproduce at a higher rate than most white canadians, and mass amounts believe they deserve special rights. in calgary, ab, mandarin schools are being built, in ontario, mosques and other minority religious churches are being built. not to say they do not have their own religious rights, but when they can get away with crimes and special treatments we "peacekeepers" have spent too much time napping on our laws. immigrants recieve 25 grand checks to "get started" while our youth struggle harder than ever. being a person from a single income family, i have had no support, and i receive none from my government either. how do i get my 25 thousand to get started? must i move away, then apply to our immigration boards for approval to collect? basic line is if our country supported its youth through more incentive programs such as money for people who need it so they can concentrate on their education, we would not have a need for this "immigrant incentive". With bigger incrimentally growing baby bonuses we would not need immigrants to keep our population up. I, as a full time manager of the service industry, cannot afford to eat, pay my car insurance and gas, and pay rent all at the same time. two blocks away in one house 25 immigrants live and split the payments. This is not the quality of living canada used to be known for. simply being, without old money, our white people will quickly vanish, because our minimum wages are high enough for multiple people pitching on one payment, while people living the canadian lifestyle cannot afford a one bedroom apartment. thanks alot canada, next time, why dont you teach them one of our two NATIONAL languages before allowing them to live here. we all know when we are a minority there will be an overthrow and everything white man has done in the past will be taken out upon us, oppressing us in our own nation

Jeff, you speak a great truth. I've had talks with my husband about this and we hope that by the time we (as whites) become a minority, we can retire.
However, I believe a real problem, not being addressed here is the attitude of most caucasians that I know. Our country was formed on the white anglo-saxon religions, yet, most whites I know are not "religious" in any sense and rarely, if ever, attend a church. I don't either. However, I DO believe this is now our demise.
The eastern cultures are very dedicated to their belief system(s) and have taken those beliefs, as any person should, into their everyday lives, and therefore, into the workplace.
Therefore, what has happened, we now have immigrants who are dedicated, loyal and hardworking because it IS what they believe. Maybe we should learn a lesson from this??
I truly believe that if the white anglo-saxon would get back to their origins themselves, the government wouldn't be looking to replace us in the workplace.

@Lisa...religion has nothing to do with it. It's the parents job to instill a strong work ethic in their children and I think this is where the problem therein lies. With video games, internet, and social networking, parental control has become increasingly detached. What we have ended up with is a generation with an undeserved sense of entitlement because parents are unwilling to step in and take the reigns over their childs development. I've heard it too many times "Oh he/she will come home and go on the computer for hours. They practically raise themselves!" Religion is a farce and does not determine how strong ones work ethic is. You want to weed out the immigrants from this country...organized religion is the absolute last place to look. More responsible parenting would be a good place to start...
Posted by: Lisa | May 14, 2021 2:43:01 PM
Skyskraper--I agree with you on the parenting thing completely. I do agree that most parents don't do much parenting at all anymore. Everyone seems to want to leave the responsibility of raising the child to someone else...and I'll admit, from raising my own children, that there is definitely alot of responsibility in raising a child.
My original point however, was only that there is a very good reason immigrants are getting hired more. THEY happen to be learning their morals, good work ethics from their religions, to the best of my knowledge. As a follow up to my previous statement, you can't deny that Canadian white-anglo saxon religions through the bible DO teach great morals also. The 10 Commandments, for an example. Therefore, I disagree with you that organized religion is the last place to look. I think, in Canada, we are losing our "foundation" in teaching our youth...and our Canadian history teaches us that our "foundation" is the bible.
