Canadian job growth continues at healthy pace

If you're still looking for a job, there may be hope yet.

According to Statistics Canada, employers across the country have added more than 250,000 jobs over the past 12 months and that trend is expected to continue.

Economic uncertainty is running rampant across the globe, but that doesn't seem to be the case here at home.

In fact, 48 per cent of companies surveyed indicated they are planning on hiring new permanent, full-time employees from July 1 to December 31, 2013, an increase of eight percentage points over the same period last year.

Brent Rasmussen, President of CareerBuilder North America, says, "Canada's job market continues to show growth in a variety of industries and is resulting in an unemployment rate that continues to trend down.

"Our survey tells us that employers will continue to invest in the areas of their companies that strengthen their brands, bring in new customers, and drive innovation."

So just where are these jobs?

Well, according to the survey the sectors most likely to hire are those in customer service (33 per cent); sales (24 per cent); Information Technology (22 per cent); production (17 per cent); marketing (17 per cent); accounting/finance (14 per cent); and research and development (14 per cent).

The study also revealed that there are many organizations looking to hire talented employees with specialized skills to handle the evolving workplace.

For example, employers cited various emerging positions in their businesses that that will require skills in specialized areas including social media; cloud technology; financial regulation; mobile technology; cyber security; health informatics; and global relations.

The survey also found that while the job market continues to strengthen, workers are staying loyal to their current companies with only 30 per cent indicating that they may be leaving their current job within the next year.

However, employers are also concerned that they may lose valuable employees from their organizations due to the intense competition for in-demand talent.
