Still throwing your money down the drain?
It's hard enough to earn, so when you've got some cash it makes no sense to fritter it away.
Ever wonder how much money you could have saved if you had kept it in your wallet instead of blowing it on some tchatchke that started to gather dust far sooner than you ever expected?
If you want to feel a bit better about your situation, check out Spendster.
Run by the National Endowment for Financial Education, it’s a fun place to share videos and stories about some of the really stupid purchases we’ve all made.
In addition to video and photo uploads, you’ll also find a calculator that determines the actual cost of unnecessary and poorly used credit card purchases and how much these expenditures could have generated for retirement.
So, other than a Slap Chop and maybe a bread machine, what’s the worst purchase you have ever made?

I feel like I'm reading an msn-stream of comments from when I was back in elementary school. Have people forgotten how to pay respect to other's opinions? No one is an idiot or a bitch, we all grew up in different ways, and in different cultures, and by having done so we were all lead to our own personal conclusions by experience. My life experience has not been remotely the same as another's, but neither one is better. Put down your fists and agree to disagree. There are so many other wonderful things you could be doing instead of trying to ridicule and power-trip someone over the web. I read this stream to see what unfortunate purchases people have made and to add my own. Now I don't see the point of adding.

Eh, Nigerians speak the best English and they don't stink and there are many of them living in Toronto and . . . . . Now what?
The best way to spend your money, visit Nigeria where it's 24/7 summer and no prejudice. Best soccer country and zero ice hockey. The Toronto version of Nigeria is called Lagos. You go there once, you don't want to leave again. If you get any fraudulent email, there's a 90% chance it's not coming from nigeria

Umm.......Wasn't this supposed to be about foolish purchases??? Wow what a lot of angry people out there. No wonder there are so many problems in this world. Anyway, the most recent silly purchase I made was a juicer. I thought that it would make it easy to live healthier. Unfortunately the machine is much harder to use and even harder to clean than shown on those commercials. I guess there is no truth or integrity in advertising.

How did this discussion about stupid expenditures turn into a heated discussion on internet dating and prejudice? Anyway, I think I know Dennis who bought speakers from the back of the van when we were in university. Although I mocked how the discussion turned to internet dating, I spent $60 for one month of eHarmony and met my husband. Best $60 I ever spent. Just wish he would clean the bathroom wthout my asking.

Wow Sara, try some fiber in your diet! You sound like you haven't had a good shit in a while.

Don't pick on bread machines. I've made a hundred or so loaves with mine. Unlike the store variety no sugar is required. You just have to get off your duff and use them. Easy to set-up an easy to clean.
Stupid purchases? How about 80% of the stuff produced overseas and trucked all over North American highways.

"DJ"
OH MY GOODNESS...I'VE ALSO MADE THIS SILLY MISTAKE IN PURCHASING A JUICE MAN JUICER.
AND YOU ARE RIGHT. THEY PROTRAY IT AS "EASY TO USE"...FRUITS GO THROUGH WITH EASE.ETC.
"NOT TRUE"
..MOST APPLES ARE TOO LARGE FOR THE UNIT,NOT TO MENTION THE COMPONENT USED TO PRESS THE FRUIT INTO THE MACHINE IS DIFFICULT TO LIFT OUT AFTERWARDS.
DONT FEEL BAD YOUR'E NOT THE ONLY ONE.
YES IT IS AN ABSOLUTE HEADACHE TO CLEAN!
YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GREAT MEMORY WHEN PUTTING IT BACK TOGETHER PROPERLY...DJ, BE HAPPY BECAUSE I'M SURE YOU'VE USED YOUR UNIT MORE THAN I USED MINE...(I USED IT ONCE AND GAVE IT AWAY) EATING FRUITS AND VEGGIES THE OLD FASHION WAY IS BEST.

Hmmph. You all talk about strangers in this land. My worst purchase was actually more of a sale... I got four furs plus six pounds, ten shillings for all of the land called South haven, Brookhaven and Bellport. I thought it was a great deal at the time (about 1664), but it seems the land has appreciated somewhat since then, whereas the furs are rotted and the money devalued. But there sure are a lot of foriegners here now - and they refuse to speak the native tongue and think they own the whole place just 'cause there are a lot of them. I say they should all go somewhere else if they don't want to respect the culture and customs of the original settlers of this continent. So the Dutch, Spanish, English, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, African, Israeli, Middle-Eastern, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, South American, Australian and East Indian can ALL go away and leave us WEST Indian and other indigenous people to care for this land properly! Heck, I'll even refund your money and give you some better quality seal skins (Europeans don't seem to want them anymore).
(...now the trouble with having one's tongue in one's cheek is that it is likely to get bit...)
Thhpppppbbbtt!!

jeez, all the poster said was that she thought the scammers were middle eastern because of their grammer (read accent )...if someone comes into work that has an unusual accent or name I am interested so I ask them where they are from,,,as an imigrant to Canada I am always interested in other new comers....I am not prejudiced against them...and as for the poor grammer, we always used to have a bit of a chuckle when my mother wrote a note in English because it was written in the same accent that she spoke with.
Noticing someone is different is not prejudice...pretending we are all the same is worse. Enjoy our similarities and differences and get off your high horse...everyone has "prejudices" for and against...it is human nature.
Let those who are free from sin cast the first stone and take the beam out of your own eye before you try to take the cinder out of someone elses.
I'm not Christian but I can recognize truth when I come across it.
Winston Churchill said (I paraphrasing) that men sometimes stumble across the truth but usually pick themselves up and then hurry on as if nothing happened...very true.
And no I did not check for spelling or errors in grammer...I just got off work and typing out my thoughts as best I can...if you cannot grasp my meaning, well, shame on you.

I'll tell you what a stupid purchase is, Cable or Dish. Anyone paying monthly for Cable or Dish should really reconsider. It's a good thing we have places like http://www.WorldWideTVonPC.com, now you don't have to pay!!

GOD ! Listen to you guys ! You are pathetic , it totally amuses me how people turn a comments page about bad purchases into a forum about racism. GROW UP !

Worst purchase?
1. Just about anything I bought threw E-bay.
2. Just about any major purchase (bike, TV) I bought from Walmart or stores in that vein.
E-bay taught me some hard lessons, if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. And you get what you pay for, so read the fine print.
Walmart taught me that just because it's a "name" brand doesn't mean it's a quality product. The sad thing is most other B&M retailers are following Walmart's lead in this regard.

How did a simple question about stupid purchases turn into a fiery debate about prejudice and grammar?
Anyway, there are plenty of white people who have terrible spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. There are also plenty of ethnic people who use English perfectly. There is no sense in judging a book by its cover - If you haven't seen the face of a person you've connected with on a dating service (or anywhere else), then it's idiotic to make assumptions.
Prejudice/judgment to do with anything, whether weight, race, religion, etc. is ridiculous. Think of it like this: We are all wearing the same outfit, only it comes in different colours and sizes. Now, if you saw someone on the street wearing the same outfit as you, only in a different colour (or size), what right would you have to criticize them? You are wearing the exact same outfit. Human beings are all the same underneath.
The worst purchase I ever made was a book of poetry from an online website that claimed it would publish and copyright some of my poems if I opted to purchase an anthology of poetry submitted to the site by various strangers. I ordered and paid for the (very expensive) book and uploaded a poem. A few weeks later, two pieces of cardboard with loose sheets in-between arrived in a package by mail. That poor excuse for a 'book' was non-refundable.
Sincerely,
A Torontonian.

Oh, I just realized the racism debate was pretty much over. I probably shouldn't have surfaced it again.

This has got to be the funniest stream of ignorance and intolerance I have ever read. This is how wars are created. We are all human beings, none of you are idiots. Nobody is better than anyone else, and if you think so, you certainly have a lot to learn. I think the topic at hand is about the worst purchase you have ever made. The worst purchase I have ever made has to be audio engineering software from Austrailia. The best software I have ever worked with, but the crappiest contract I have ever dealt with after my computer crashed and I lost everything. Since I had an ID key, I tried to reinstall the software and it did not work. I contacted the company(a very costly long distance phone call, I might add) and they told me that the ID key means nothing(even though it says to keep it safe just in case you need to reenter it). They told me I have to pay again and said that they would send me the Installation CD for a fee as well. That fee translated into more than the product purchase amount in shipping and handling costs. I love the software so much that I want to repurchase, however my pride is telling me to suck it up and find a North American alternative. Anyone know a good equivalent to WavePad for audio software?

I don't think there is anything wrong with saying "Merry Christmas" to someone who celebrates Christmas. I think that people CAN accept other cultures/religions/practices even if they don't necessarily agree with them or have the same practices themselves (though I do have a hard time with a few things, like female circumcision). I think it's easy to say "you don't like it here, go back home", but is super simplistic and not really an option for a lot of people. Tell me that people who are born here don't bitch about a lot of things in our society! I have also witnessed, on MANY occasions, people who are born here and HIGHLY educated, actually make up words, and have absolutely atrocious grammar!
p.s. I bought a 2009 RAV4 and a gym membership last year, definitely my two worst purchases, especially given the recall on the vehicle!

a 1971 Buick Riviera I purchased in '77 for three grand. a block away from the dealer, it was out of gas and I realized it had NO oil. lluckily there was a service station on the corner. I think I drove it into my underground parking and it sat there until I managed to sell it to a car restorer friend a year later for almost nothing. YIKES!!!!!! The dealership was most unhelpful, going out of business the day after my purchase...........
